Music is such a powerful force. Somebody says: "When we are happy we enjoy the music, but when we are sad, we understand the lyrics."
“I think music in itself is healing,” adds American musician Billy Joel. “It’s an explosive expression of humanity. It’s something we are all touched by. No matter what culture we’re from, everyone loves music.” Most of us would wholeheartedly agree with this statement.
Numerous scientific and psychological studies have shown that music can lift our moods, combat depression, improve blood flow in ways similar to statins, lower levels of stress-related hormones such as cortisol, and ease pain. Another research also observed, "listening to music triggers the release of opioids in the brain, the body’s natural pain relievers."
A recent study was more suggestive:
“If music was a drug, it would be marketable. […] Music is a noninvasive, safe, cheap intervention that should be available to everyone undergoing surgery.” - Dr. Catharine Meads; MNT Study
God created in us the ability and an innate desire to sing and make melody in whatever life circumstances we are in. In the Bible, music is an important part of worship and praise to God, so it only seems fitting that Bible verses about music can be found all throughout the Scriptures. The apostle Paul wrote:
"Addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart" (Eph. 5:19)
So why not sing or enjoy listening to a beautiful music composition? One entire book in Scriptures is a collection of poems and songs. It is called the book of Psalms. It is a powerful meditative verses for people needing comfort, healing, assurance. King David's words in Psalm 23 is one of the most adapted verses among music lyricists which is also a personal favorite by many:
"The Lord is my shepherd;
I shall not want.
He makes me to lie down in green pastures;
He leads me beside the still waters.
He restores my soul;
He leads me in the paths of righteousness
For His name’s sake.
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil;
For You are with me;
Your rod and
Your staff, they comfort me.
You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies;
You anoint my head with oil;
My cup runs over.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
All the days of my life;
And I will dwell in the house of the Lord
Forever." - Psalm 23
