Passover Lamb: Type and Antitype

The Passover Lamb is a type and shadow of Jesus (Yeshua) the Messiah who is the true fulfillment of that prophecy. In this briefer, we will show you how the setting aside of the Passover Lamb on the 10th day of Nissan fits exactly the actions of Jesus Christ leading to His ultimate Passover/DUB feasts in 30 A.D.

✴️Prophecy: During Passover, a lamb was needed to be set aside for every household for 4 days (10th of Nisan till the 14th) right before it is sacrificed. It was to be inspected during these 4 days for any spot or blemish.

“Speak ye unto all the congregation of Israel saying in the 10th day of this month they shall take to them every man a lamb according to the house of their fathers, a lamb for a house.” – Exodus 12:3

Through the Passover Lamb, God was speaking of the coming "Lamb of God" who would take away the sins of the world. Jesus perfectly fulfilled the promise of redemption found in the Passover Lamb.

❇️Fulfillment: "The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!" (John 1:29)

"And looking at Jesus as He walked, he said, 'Behold the Lamb of God!'" (John 1:36)

✴️ Prophecy: The Passover lamb was to be chosen and set apart on the 10th day of the first month of Nissan. "Speak to all the congregation of Israel, saying: ‘On the tenth of this month every man shall take for himself a lamb, according to the house of his father, a lamb for a household." (Exo. 12:3)

✳️Fulfillment: On the 10th day of Nisan, Jesus rode into Jerusalem on the foal of a donkey and was hailed as the King of the Jews.

"Then, six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany...(verse 1)

"The next day a great multitude that had come to the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, took branches of palm trees and went out to meet Him, and cried out: “Hosanna! ‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!’ The King of Israel!” (John 12:1, 12-13)

✴️ Prophecy: The lamb was to be inspected for four days until the 14th day of the month for any spot or blemish that might disqualify it as the sacrificial lamb.

"Your lamb shall be without blemish, a male of the first year. You may take it from the sheep or from the goats." (Exo. 12:5)

✳️Fulfillment: Jesus openly taught in the Holy Temple and synagogues until the 14th day of the month and no fault was found in Him. It was also during this time that the authorities (Sadducees, Scribes and Pharisees) were busy looking for "faults" or a false witness that will accuse Christ of wrong doing.

"Now it was Caiaphas [the high priest] who advised the Jews that it was expedient that one man should die for the people." (John 18:14)

"Then Pilate, when he had called together the chief priests, the rulers, and the people, said to them, 'You have brought this Man to me, as one who misleads the people. And indeed, having examined Him in your presence, I have found NO FAULT in this Man concerning those things of which you accuse Him.'" (Luke 23:13-14)

✴️ Prophecy: At the APPOINTED TIME time ('ben ha arbayim'), the Passover lamb was to be slain by the whole congregation of Israel. "Now you shall keep it until the fourteenth day of the same month. Then the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel shall kill it at twilight ['between the two evenings' or ben ha arbayim] (Exo.12:6).

What's the meaning behind this enigmatic phrase? Does 'ben ha arbayim' means "sunset before dark" of Nissan 14, as some alleged?

✳️Fulfillment: The Synoptic gospel writers were all in accord in testifying that Jesus died at around the "ninth hour" (i.e., 3:00PM) of Nissan 14th. Jesus dying at the stake around 3:00 in the AFTERNOON proved its intended meaning as the ultimate Passover sacrifice. Otherwise, a Messiah dying on a different day and hour will make His sacrifice "in vain" (or invalid), and the offer of salvation questionable (Heb. 9:19-22). Without the proper "shedding of blood there is no remission of sin." (v.22)

Jesus, as the Lamb of God, was delivered and publicly hanged on a Roman execution stake at the same time the Passover lambs were being slaughtered in the Temple. This was afternoon hours before the Feast of Unleavened bread commenced at sunset (a high-day Sabbath) (See: Matt.27:46; Mark 15:24; Luke 23:44-46)

---------

“You know that you were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from you vain conversation (way of life) received by tradition from you fathers but with the PRECIOUS BLOOD OF CHRIST, as of a LAMB without blemish and without spot who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world but was manifest in these last times for you.” – 1 Peter 1:18–20.
